I do blame BAEM. Not nearly proactive enough. I have had the busiest
Christmas in my life and on Boxing Day I spent 0ver 7 hours trying to get an
unstable head injury admitted. I phoned all around the country and
eventually got a bed in Oxford and they were superb. This in spite of the
fact that resusc was like a madhouse with patients doubling up. I have never
been in such a position of helplessness as why should we be faced with this
situation. Heard today on local radio from some administrator from the same
health authority where I work that there was no problem with ITU beds.
Obviously don't work on the same planet.
Usual story of providing primary health care as patients unable to contact
out of hours deputising service as all their lines blocked. I did a straw
poll and many of the GP numbers were not answered.
Sorry chaps but I predicted this last year and BAEM did nothing. Even put a
ridiculous story out that every A & E dept in the country was going to have
extra staff. I can assure you that our extra medical and nursing staff must
have been figments of the imagination.
