After some consideration I have decided to abstain on this vote, for
2 reasons.
1. I am still confused as to whether 'agent role' is really an element
qualifier. I am tending towards agreeing with Andy Powell on this,
but am not sufficiently convinced to vote 'C against role'. There
would seem to be some advantages in making use of existing role
lists, provided they are extensible, which doesn't seem possible if
role is an element qualifier. But this is a secondary consideration.
It must be more important to get the semantics and the data model
right.
2. If I were to vote 'for' a role qualifier, I would find it difficult to
choose between A and B because I have no knowledge of library
cataloguing controlled vocabularies and their extensibility. I am
wondering why there has to be a distinction between A and B.
Couldn't the definition for role be something like, where eg. DCMI-
ROLE1 is another controlled vocabularly? :
A Role qualifier that is based on values selected from
an identified controlled vocabulary, including that maintained by
DCMI, and including
the ability to have uncontrolled values.
For example: Role = "Actor"
Vocab = "MARC-Relator"
Role = "WebMaster"
Vocab = "DCMI-ROLE1"
Role = "Dishwasher"
Vocab = ""
Best wishes,
Ann
