Hi folks,
I've been lurking on the list up to now, although I always find the notices
useful, and the religion/spirituality discussion did get me pondering. On
Greg's point, does the last methodist know that a group of people are
encompassing her/his death?
Anyway, now I've de-lurked, what I'm mailing about is the place of religious
commitment/values in the workplace. I work within legal disciplines, and
have been doing some work on religion and employment law. A couple of the
hot issues are :
* Does the religious character of an organisation give it grounds for
disregarding the non-discrimination regime of the State? Most obviously
relevant to, say, a Church which believes its ministers have to be male; but
what about say, a religious bookshop?
* Can religious individuals come together in an organisation that waives
their normal protection as employees, even if they work full-time for the
organisation, receive money from the organisation expected to cover their
entire living costs etc.? Particularly interesting if such an individual is
later "dismissed" from the organisation, perhaps decades down the line, for
a doctrinal disagreement.
I appreciate that these are ought rather than is questions, but wondered if
anyone else on the list was interested in religion and the workplace,
particularly religious *employers*?
Peter.
