Survey Data Analysis I:
Introducing Descriptive and Inferential Statistics
Dates: 12-14 January at the University of Southampton.
Presented by Christos Korovessis (National Centre for Social
Research) and Nyovani Madise (University of Southampton)
The objectives of the course are
a) to enable participants to develop an understanding of the basic
principles of the statistical analysis of survey data;
and
b) to enable participants to employ appropriate methods of
presenting data in research reports and papers.
The course content will include descriptive statistics, hypothesis
testing for differences in means and proportions, one-way analysis
of variance, and basic contingency table analysis.
The course will include workshop sessions so that participants can
work through practical exercises, and computer practicals using
SPSS.
Target Audience:
The course is aimed at researchers who need to perform basic
analyses on data from sample surveys, especially those in the
social, economic, educational and medical sciences. Participants
should have basic knowledge of simple statistical concepts through
a previous introductory course or equivalent experience. This
"refresher" course provides a good background to the Survey Data
Analysis II course which runs from 26-28 January 2000.
Course Materials:
Participants will receive written course notes and a reading list.
The Instructors:
Christos Korovessis is a Researcher at the Survey Methods Centre
at the National centre for Social Research. He is a statistician
specialising in survey data analysis using large and complex survey
datasets and sample design. He has worked as a visiting lecturer
with the Social Statistics Research Unit and Sociology Department
at City University.
Nyovani Madise is the CASS Lecturer in the Social Statistics
Department at the University of Southampton. She specialises in
the statistical analysis of large survey data. She has taught
courses on multivariate data analysis and generalised linear
models at both undergraduate and masters levels.
Fee:
Standard: stlg350
Reduced: stlg75 (to qualify, you must be a full-time research
