Dear Liz,
I don't know whether you are familiar with "Hobson-Jobson" The Anglo-Indian
Dictionary. It was republished in paperback by Wordsworth reference in 1996.
It was published first in 1886 - the authors being Henry Yule and
A.C.Burnell.
The words on the cover say that it is "A spice-box of etymological
curiosities and colourful expressions" - it certainly is and is a real
delight. I know that you would enjoy it.
Many thanks for all your interesting contributions - and to those who
provide all the other gems we enjoy. Best wishes Michael Smith
(Hon.Sec.)
