Dear Kristleifur,
Choice of assessment really depends on what information you wish to obtain
and htois not clear from your e-mail - I presume you are looking for an
assessment to give you an indication of the degree of motor function. I
have recently completed a systematic review of methods to assess posture,
balance and motor function in people with stroke. There is no one
assessment that will cover all aspects of motor function in detail for all
levels of ability (although I am in the process of developing one). Nor are
they known to sensitive enough to detect changes on a weekly basis - most
have only been tested to see if they detect change at the start and end of
rehab or on admission and discharge. Of the assessment currently available
I concluded that the MAS was about the best measure around. It doesn't
cover standing balance in much detail, in which case the Berg Balance scale
is the best, but the Berg scale does not cover sitting balance in
sufficient detail for early stroke patients.
So I would use the sitting section of the MAS and then the Berg scale. If
you want a general measure of motor function then the Gross function
section of the Rivermead Motor Assessment is best
Hope this is helpful,
Sarah
