Hello again listmembers,
We are back with another query : a letter from
C. Want of Osmaston 8th October 1798. It is addressed to
Herbert Brace Esqre 4 Essex Court Middle Temple London.
Questions :
1) Would Herbert Brace necessarily have been connected with the law with
that address or were there any residences in these buildings?
2) If he was a 'legal eagle' is there a list of names anywhere that would
give me information about him?
he mentions "I am compelled again to solicit your attention to the
different monies owed to me- my illness I fear will be very expensive...."
so the third question is :
3) what kind of treatment could be expected in 1798 for 'any kind of
illness' which would cost a lot of money, as I thought at that time it
was mostly herbals and apothecaries - did doctors charge high fees for
their services?
4) would anyone in the Derbyshire area know of any records showing a C.
Want living in Osmaston in 1798 ?
5) I have been given information about the parish of Osmaston from a
gazeteer of about the 1850's where it says it is on the Grand Trunk Canal,
and on the Midland railway with a population of 152 and 28 houses. How
different would it have been in 1798 ? No railway for sure - what about
the canal?
Any ideas/information would be much appreciated.
If anyone would like a transcript of the whole letter - just ask.
