This is a very interesting debate. Picking up Bob's point about monuments
and landscape features, a number of local authorities are now making
progress towards putting their Sites and Monuments Records (SMR) onto the
web. If this is the sort of information which people want to have access to
then it makes sense to ensure that individuals pass any information onto
their county/regional/district archaeologist for inclusion on the SMR and
encourage them to make SMR information available on the web. In Durham we
don't as yet have the SMR on the web but it is available as a standalone
database in 12 locations around the county and we hope to have a web
presence in 2000.
On the more general issue I would echo the comments on the need for
standards. The 'Dublin Core ' (http://purl.org/DC/index.htm) is becoming
widely accepted as a standard and lists 10 elements or fields which should
be provided for any electronic information record.
