Janet,
>> It takes me about 10 minutes to type in the information for one
individual - the registers are particularly rich in information I intend
using Excel.
Does anyone know if this type of work has been undertaken before - if
so, by whom?<<
I would suggest that you consider using a database rather than a spread
sheet. They are a lot more flexible and will enable you to interrogate your
date much more easily.
Have a look at _Databases in Historical Research_ by Charles Harvey and Jon
Press, Macmillan, 1996.
It might be worth having a word with Dr Tim Lockley at Warwick who is one
of the tutors on an Oxford University diploma course on local history being
run over the internet; it's specifically on the use of databases in local
history.
Good luck,
