Two Part-time Library Research Officer Posts (17.5 hours per week,
£16,286 pro-rata)
The ILRT is the largest group of its kind in the UK (nearly 50 staff).
It is an international centre of excellence in the development and use
of new technology in learning and research. We are now looking for two
part-time library researchers to join two of our leading Internet based
services.
SOSIG (Social Science Information Gateway) SOSIG is a nationally funded
Internet service that provides an easy means of access to a wide variety
of high quality Internet resources for social scientists. Each resource
is strictly evaluated before it is catalogued with a description and key
words. Users can browse under subject headings ranging from Anthropology
to Statistics; or they can search the entire SOSIG database using their
own search terms. The central team work from the ILRT, with additional
staff and partners working at educational institutions around the UK.
Job Title: SOSIG Research Officer/Cataloguer (part-time)
Job Purpose: To locate, assess and organise high quality Internet
resources in the social sciences for inclusion in the Social Science
Information Gateway (SOSIG) and to perform a systematic review of
current records on the gateway.
Staff Category: Grade 1 Academic Related Scale
Hours/Work Patterns: Half time for six months
Main Duties/Responsibilities The post involves working as part of a
geographically distributed team creating resource descriptions for
SOSIG. The main duties will be:
* locating, evaluating and cataloguing Internet resources in the social
sciences using appropriate search strategies
* performing a systematic review of records already held in the SOSIG
database
* evaluating and cataloguing resources recommended by the subject
community
* maintaining a database of high quality Internet resources
* liaising and working with the subject community to ensure that their
needs are fully met by the gateway
Essential Qualifications/Skills/Experience
* experience in using the Internet and bibliographic databases
* a good honours degree and professional or relevant postgraduate
library qualifications or equivalent
* the ability to work on a collaborative basis as part of a team
* good level of general computer literacy
* accuracy and attention to detail
Desirable
* Social science degree or qualification
* cataloguing experience and use of library standards e.g. UDC
REGARD
REGARD is a database of research projects and associated outputs,
available on the World Wide Web and funded by the Economic and Social
Research Council. REGARD is run collaboratively by the Institute and
the University of Bristol Library and combines a fully functional
bibliographic database with the ease of use and familiarity of a Web
interface. There are currently 10 staff, including three other members
of the cataloguing team.
Job Title: REGARD Research Officer/Cataloguer (part-time)
Job Purpose To create high quality cataloguing records, using AACR2 and
the MARC format for inclusion on REGARD. REGARD is a bibliographic
database on the World Wide Web that holds details of all research
projects funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
Staff Category: Grade 1 Academic Related Scale
Hours/Work Patterns: Half time for six months
Main Duties/Responsibilities
* create high quality records, using AACR2 and MARC format
* allocate subject terms to ESRC records where appropriate
* carry out appropriate analysis and research to maintain the quality of
new and existing records
* raise queries about data with the funding body and grant holders where
required
* deal with specific cataloguing enquiries raised by other members of
the team, other library staff, ESRC staff, users or the general public
* maintain professional awareness of developments in cataloguing and of
general developments in the Library world and related areas including IT
and Internet developments.
Essential Qualifications/Skills/Experience
* a good honours degree and professional or relevant postgraduate
library qualifications or equivalent
* the ability to work on a collaborative basis as part of a team
* good level of general computer literacy
* accuracy and attention to detail
* experience in using the Internet and bibliographic databases.
Desirable
* some knowledge of the MARC format and AACR2 is desirable, and previous
experience of the LIBERTAS or ALEPH 500 systems would be useful.
Both posts are half-time and could be combined to form a full-time post.

positions. Both posts will be based at the ILRT. The weekly working
pattern is negotiable. Both posts are fixed-term contracts for six
months in the first instance. The anticipated start date is Monday 10
January 2000 although this is subject to negotiation. Starting salary
£16,286 (pro rata).
