A Lecturer is required to teach in the following areas on undergraduate and
postgraduate courses in the School of Information Studies. The main topics
to be covered include business information resources and services
(including official and legal), electronic information systems searching,
electronic library and networked information developments. An ability to
teach aspects of information technology would also be an advantage. The
successful candidate will also be expected to take on a course

Job Description:
One year contract. Full-time, renewable, to start February 2000, or as
soon as possible thereafter. Salary: £18,256 - £25,552 p.a.
This post is based in the School of Information Studies, one of three
Schools (the others are Computing and English) in the Faculty. The
postholder will be expected to work closely with other members of the
School?s undergraduate and postgraduate course teams to provide quality
teaching and learning and to undertake associated duties.
Responsible to: William Foster, Head, School of Information Studies.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To prepare and deliver teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate
courses in the School of Information Studies, in particular in the areas of
business information resources and services (including official and legal),
electronic information systems searching, electronic library and networked
information developments.
2. To teach in other subject areas such as information technology,
subject to negotiation with Head of School.
3. To carry out assessment and marking of student examinations and
coursework.
4. To supervise students on a one-to-one basis with regard to
undergraduate projects and postgraduate dissertation.
5. To undertake administrative duties associated with the School's
undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
6. To attend School and Faculty meetings and boards as appropriate.
7. To act as Personal Tutor to a specified number of students.
8. To assist in the marketing and promotion of School courses through
involvement in events such as open days and exhibitions.
9. To liaise and cooperate with other teaching and administrative staff
in the School and Faculty.
10. Any other duties commensurate with the post as determined by Head of
School.
These duties demand an outgoing and energetic approach from someone who can
demonstrate enthusiasm, initiative and commitment at all times.
Requirements of postholder: Lecturer
Qualifications:
Essential: First degree in appropriate discipline (such as information
studies or systems, media or culture studies)
Desirable: Higher degree
Experience:
Desirable: Teaching experience in higher education
Practical experience relevant to subjects to be taught
Practical involvement in relevant research projects
Skills and abilities:
Essential: Sound knowledge of subjects relevant to post
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent IT skills appropriate to subjects taught
Ability to plan and manage workloads
Ability to work alone and as part of a team
Sympathetic to student aims and learning needs
Desirable: Course development experience
Research interests in appropriate field(s)
The post offers someone with a demonstrable interest in and commitment to
teaching in higher education the opportunity to begin an academic career in
a developing and challenging subject field. All new teaching staff without
three years full-time teaching experience in higher education, or who do
not have an equivalent qualification, are required to study the Certificate
in Professional Education in their first two years at UCE.
