SAVE THE GOETHE-INSTITUT MANCHESTER!
The Goethe-Institut Manchester, German Cultural Centre for Northern
England, North Wales and Northern Ireland, opened in Manchester in
1968 with the aim of promoting German as a foreign language and
providing a framework for international cultural co-operation and
dialogue. Now after over thirty years in the city the
Goethe-Institut Manchester is faced with almost complete closure,
leaving only a reduced library & information service and teachers'
support department. The proposed closure will mean
- no invitations to speakers and experts from Germany to seminars and
conferences
- no more language courses depriving the people of Greater Manchester
of the unique opportunity to learn and practise German in an
authentic environment. (The Goethe-Institut is now the sole provider
of post A-level German courses in the whole of Greater Manchester.)
- no more exhibition work with galleries and shows such as the
recent Liverpool Biennial, bringing over exciting contemporary art,
photography and new media from Germany
- no more work with local theatres promoting contemporary German
drama
- no more work with music partners such as the world famous
Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, providing opportunities
for young musicians from Germany to establish themselves in the
sophisticated UK music scene
- no more work with film societies providing the best of German
cinema.
With the imminent loss of the German Consulate in Manchester and the
Goethe-Institut in York, the Goethe-Institut Manchester will soon be
the only official representation of the Federal Republic in England,
Wales and Northern Ireland outside London. Unless concerted action is
taken NOW to prevent this savage reduction, Northern England, North
Wales and Northern Ireland with a population in excess of 19 million
will soon lose our much-used and highly appreciated services.
Please support our fight to save the Goethe-Institut Manchester by
printing out this message, signing in the space below and faxing this
sheet to all four names BEFORE 24 NOVEMBER 1999.

It is vital for Anglo-German relations and the people of Northern
England, North Wales and Northern Ireland for the Goethe-Institut
Manchester to continue its activities in promoting German language
and culture. Any cutback in these services would inflict
irreparable damage to the image of the Federal Republic in the United
Kingdom. Save the Goethe-Institut in Manchester!
