Hello,
I am a new member of this list and so need to introduce myself.
I am familiar with mailbase as I have 'owned' the list
history-child-family for the past two years or so.
But there are several reasons I am here... the first, because I am
interested in introducing my undergraduate Cultural Studies students to
disability research as an illustration of ethnographic practice and so
am keen to seek out from within the list examples of case studies.
But as an historian, I am here to raise questions about shifts in
attitudes, ideas, practices over time. As well as teaching courses in
childhood history, I'm currently running a women's history module as
part of the Women's Studies B.A. at Sheffield University. A number of my
students wish to pursue an assignment which looks at the theme of how
and why women are 'hidden from history'- a term originally coined by
Sheila Rowbottham as the title of her book which in 1973 really launched
women's history into the academy. However, the layers and layers which
cover up the visibility of women / girls lives in the past who were
excluded from 'normal' society have it seems hardly been penetrated by
historians.
The current issue of the Journal of Oral History has an article about
girls with 'learning difficulties' who were sent to a Convent and left
there for most of this century .... this kind of material is so valuable
because it gives a voice to those people and strengthens the debate
today .... I am looking for more of the same.
Can the list help? Have you discussed this in previous years ? I have
trailed through several months back and have been very impressed with
the quality of your discussion.
