>Global Day of Action against the
>World Trade Organisation Millennium Round
>
>Governments are about to make a decision which could further polarise the
>world between rich and poor and deepen the environmental crisis. We must act
>now to stop them.
>
>The World Trade Organisation (WTO) Millennium Round kicks off in Seattle on
>30th November. The WTO is the enforcer of international trade agreements. It
>is an unelected, unaccountable and undemocratic organisation with huge power
>over all our lives. The Millennium Round agenda will include:
> The Multilateral Agreement on Investment: would strictly limit the
>right and ability of governments to regulate currency speculation,
>investment in land, factories and services. M.A.I would stop governments
>considering as investment criteria the record of companies and countries on
>human rights, labour and the environment. It would ban investment
>conditions such as recycling and the use of local labour. It would grant
>absolute rights to transnational corporations to compete for public
>contracts.
> Agriculture: the US wants to stop subsidies. This would drive small
>farmers, such as Caribban banana producers to the wall world-wide,
>especially in third world countries.
> Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS):would prevent
>countries like India producing cheap food and medicines not conforming to
>US-style patent laws.
> Services: the outlawing of public provision of services including
>health, education, water, energy, tourism, film and broadcasting.
> Prohibition of import bans of Genetically Modified (GM) crops and
>seeds. The WTO has already ruled against the EU beef hormone import ban,
>while the US with WTO assent imposed punitive tariffs on EU exports like
>Roquefort cheese in retaliation.
> Technical Barriers to Trade (TBTs): could include a ban on
>labelling products as GM or non GM!
> The WTO could prohibit trade bans on the killer material asbestos.
>Despite these dangers for human rights and the environment, the Labour
>The Government and the TUC are in broad support of the Millennium Round
>agenda. But around the world hundreds of environmental and trade union
>organisations are mobilising to Stop the Millennium Round and to turn around
>the WTO.
>
>We want an agenda which reflects the needs of the people of this planet and
>our deteriorating environment, not the profits of the global transnational
>corporations. Come and hear why the round should be stopped and what you can
>do to stop it.
