Position in Southeast Asian Geography or Sociology, UCLA
(xpost H-SEASIA)

From: H-SEASIA <[log in to unmask]>
SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES AT UCLA. GEOGRAPHY OR SOCIOLOGY.
UCLA is searching for a tenure-track appointment in the physical,
environmental, demographic or economic structure of Southeast Asia.
Inquiries are welcomed at any level, though an appointment at Associate or
Assistant Professor level is probable. The position would be located as
appropriate in either the Department of Geography or Sociology, though also
teaching in the proposed Interdepartmental Program in Southeast Asian
Studies.
This position arises from a new initiative in Southeast Asian Studies at
UCLA in 1999. This includes the establishment of a Center for Southeast
Asian Studies, headed by Professor Anthony Reid (History) as Director and
Dr Barbara Gaerlan as Assistant-Director, the appointment of a Southeast
Asia Librarian (Dr Rebecca Aiken), and searches for four further faculty
positions across the Social Sciences and Humanities.
It is hoped that the appointee could begin teaching in the Fall quarter of
2000. Within the appointee's usual departmental teaching load of four
courses a year, at least two should serve the needs of an interdepartmental
program in Southeast Asian Studies as well as those of the Department
concerned. Applicants should have an outstanding record of research in
Southeast Asia in one or more of the following areas: physical or economic
geography, environmental studies, population, migration, urbanization,
rural or economic sociology, or related fields.
Enquiries should be directed to Anthony Reid, Director, Center for SE Asian
Studies ([log in to unmask]); John Agnew, Chair of the Department of
Geography ([log in to unmask]) or Roger Waldinger, Chair of Department of
Sociology ([log in to unmask]). Applications should be forwarded
to the Geography Department, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA 90095, by January 15,
2000. They should include three letters of reference (directly sent to the
Department), a cv, statement of research and teaching experience and
intentions, and samples of writing.
