In regard to the lack of coverage/debate on the Orissa cyclone, I don't
think that critical geographers should be beating up on themselves too much
on this. Don't forget that the Indian government didn't want any outside aid
in dealing with this catastrophe, embarrassed no doubt that a country busy
testing nuclear weapons should be asking for help, and initially didn't
encourage reportage either.
As for Chechenya on the other hand, I have no doubt that the silence on this
issue does arise from embarrassment; with so many critical geographers
supporting NATO intervention in Kosovo - Humanitarian Hawks was the phrase
used, I believe - now having to face up to the fact that they tied
themselves to the tail of paper tiger, a discreet silence is obviously seen
as the order of the day.
Give peace a chance, I say.
