PhD Studentship Opportunity
Refining place marketing: developing a demand-led approach.
Place marketing is an important element of local economic development
strategy. The term encompasses a range of strategic activities aimed
at enhancing the competitive advantage of localities to retain or
attract investment, private companies, competitive public sector
grants, tourists, consumers and labour. Previous research has shown
that in the UK local government remains a key actor in place
marketing. However, local authority place marketing has on the whole
been supply-led, focusing on improvements to selected assets of a
locality and generalised promotional and re-imaging campaigns.
Research suggests that generalised promotion is not particularly of
interest to target markets. In addition, local authorities rarely
undertake market research into the needs and attitudes of their target
markets. The PhD studentship will therefore focus on improving
understanding of how economic decision-makers, particularly
inward-investors, believe that local authorities and other
organisations should market their localities. The purpose is to
generate data which will be of use to local authorities in developing
demand-led marketing strategies. The research will involve surveys of
companies and working in combination with a range of organisations
involved in place marketing.
Applications are invited for this studentship which will start from
March 2000. The fees will be paid and an annual maintenance grant
awarded, currently worth £5,500. Applicants should have a good
Undergraduate or Masters degree in geography, marketing, urban
studies, planning or related disciplines (or practical experience in
marketing or local government). Application is by CV with covering
letter to the address below. Deadline for applications is 30th January
1999. Please state where you saw this advertisement.
