This is a free service to Scottish Higher Education. If you are not part of
Scottish HE sector please read on as we would still be very interested to
hear from you.
Summary:
If you have a question type or applet (for web based on-line learning
purposes only) that you would like to see developed please email us and we
will consider developing it for you. No promises and no guarantees.
Background:
The Scottish Higher Education Funding Council Generic Tools Mini-Engine
Project is being carried out at the
University of Aberdeen Medical Faculty CAL Unit. The aim of the project is
to develop a set of generic Java applets that will enable rapid Web based
CAL development. We are also developing exemplar CAL applications in a
variety of disciplines including medicine, zoology, chemistry and
architecture. Examples of completed applications using the mini-engines can
be seen at:
http://w3.abdn.ac.uk/umi2
(e-mail [log in to unmask] for passwords).
Traditionally we have produced a single 'engine' that allows rapid authoring
but constrains the user to one CAL design type. The new project makes full
use of an Object Orientated Programming (OOP) and a modular design approach
to develop a series of 'mini-engines'. In programming terms these
mini-engines are both Java and Dynamic HTML code units and are effectively
program modules.
The mini-engine types that we have developed so far include:
Stem and Answer MCQ style question with instant feedback (unmarked, 3
different types)
Point-and-click on specific areas of a diagram
Watch a Video Clip
Listen to an audio file
Place the correct items in a shopping basket
Place the choices in the correct order
Interactive slideshow and voiceover
Interactive graphs
Free text input question
The mini-engines from the project can be mixed and matched as required. Most
disciplines are able to use the mini-engines to construct a desired web
based application. They are in no way limited to the field of medicine. In
addition to disseminating these applets as part of the present Mini-Engine
project, we will be building new applets and some new exemplar applications.
If you have a question type or applet (for teaching purposes only) that you
would like to see developed please email us and we will consider developing
it for you.
