How to get to Girona:
By plane: Mainly through Barcelona airport and then by train or rented car.
Girona airport is a common destination of charter flights, but only regular
flights from Madrid land there.
By train: There is a train from Barcelona to Girona every hour. Some are
fast trains, and some others may take up to 1:20h. Fast trains coming from
big cities in Europe toward Barcelona do stop in Girona (from Paris,
Genève, Zürich, Milano, etc.).
By car: By A-2 mainroad, going from Barcelona to La Jonquera (French
border). Exit at "Girona Sud".
About Girona:
Girona is a city located in the Catalonia Autonomous region, in Spain,
100Km North-east from Barcelona, and 50Km south of the French border. It
is a city founded by the Romans. Average temperature in July is 22º
centigrade. The city is not large - that means that almost everything is
within walking distance. Girona is the destination of thousands of
tourists from throughout the world.
In less than 50Km radius there are the Pyrenees, with magnificent
landscapes, particularly attractive for nature lovers, and the Costa Brava,
with excellent beaches and wonderful rocky coasts, whose beauty is very
well-known in all Europe - and also a good number of resorts of high
cultural interest, both for those interested in history or in contemporary
art.
The historical vestiges of ancient civilizations include Iberian, Greek and
Roman architecture, all of them more than 2000 years old, Romanesque
monasteries, Gothic temples, the medieval Jewish quarter in Girona city,
among a long list of places of interest.
The artistic, folkloric and gastronomic experiences one may have in this
region are very broad, and include a visit to the Dalí museum in Figueres
city (30Km from Girona city).
Considering all possibilities together, Girona is an exceptional tourist
destination to take some extra days for vacation, that may be extended to
Barcelona city, visiting the Gaudí modernist buildings, Picasso and Miró
museums, the 92 Olympic Games surroundings, and the preparation of the 2004
Universal Forum of Cultures.
Take advantage of this opportunity by taking extra days for travel in
Girona, Catalonia, Spain, and other neighboring countries in Europe and
arround the Mediterranean Sea.
