John -
I can think of a good few major RTAs during the last couple of years in this
area (South West / West Midlands) and, of course, Southall rail crash was, I
think, 1996. A couple of major maritime incidents also spring to mind as
having actually gone OK but with massive potential for disaster (fire on
board Sally Star Ferry, Ramsgate, collision cruise ship/container vessel
Dover Strait this year, fire on board chemical carrier off Scotland earlier
this year requiring ship and coastal evacs). I'm sure the Coastguard press
team at Southampton could help with info re. these (01703 329100).Depends on
your definition of major, really.
Ref Richard More's point, there was also a multiple fatality RTA near
Stonehenge a couple of weeks ago.
Perhaps incident returns from BASICS could also help? Try dropping a line to
their Chief Exec (sorry Joan, I know you're busy enough already....)via
www.basics.org.uk to see if this avenue's open to you.
I can let you have further details on some of the maritime ones if you
want - drop me a line on [log in to unmask] if I can help.
Regards,
Simon Dennis
