Hi, Rosa,
Look at Chapter 1 from Eisner's book, The enlightened eye. That chapter
title is "What makes a study qualitative?" Wolcott's Description,
Analysis, and Interpretation book is good, too. The Coffee & Adkinson book
Making Sense of Qualitative Data has a very good chapter on coding (Chapter
2), and C. K. Riessman has a nice little SAGE monograph on narrative analysis.
Beyond that, check for key readings on generalizability, validity, and the
Guba & Lincoln's issues of "constructed realities" in miscellaneous
publications. Along with the role of subjectivity, those issues will tend
to come up, especially by those who challenge the non-positivist
orientation. The following journals and books might have additional useful
references:
International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education (Jim Scheurich,
Co-editor)
Qualitative Inquiry (Denzin & Lincoln, editors)
Handbook of Qualitative Research (Denzin & Lincoln)
On another note, how far along into your teaching are you? First, second,
third, fourth year? I'd be interested to know about your background, the
institution you graduated from, etc. I myself am a native Texan and am in
my third year as faculty at UTEP.
Good luck with your class, both because it's new and because your
environment is very quantitative and therefore challenging. Hasta pronto,
Maricela Oliva, Ph.D.
