The Trent and Mersey Canal became known as the Grand Junction Canal but is
now better known as the Trent and Mersey Canal. It was built by the
engineer, James Brindley and opened in 1777 I t runs from the River Trent
at Derwent Mouth to Preston Brook, is 93.5 miles long and has 76 locks.
