Hi, I've just joined the list and am beginning PhD research into
representations of disability in film and tv; please excuse the somewhat
muddled approach! My specific interest is in the area of the body and
notions of masculinity and femininity. I am looking at differences and
similarities between representations of disabled and non-disabled people,
especially in terms of sexuality/attractiveness etc. I am intending to use
predominantly textual analysis. I hope to begin with analysis of the London
Marathon tv coverage comparing the wheelchair race with the rest of the
event, and then the Sydney Olympics athletics coverage which I will compare
with that for the Paralympics. I will also be analysing a range of other
media texts, both fictional and non-fictional. I am new to the area of
disability studies, and am non-disabled. I would therefore be grateful for
any comments on my research in general, and also any pointers you may have
regarding ethical considerations; I am very conscious of the possibility
that my research could be construed as using disabled people as "interesting
subjects for study", something which I desperately want to avoid. All
comments would be welcome,
Lynne Roper
