Dear All,
This is esp. for those who are/will be in and around the
Dundee-Aberdeen-Glasgow region in the first week of December.
Professor Kevin Cox from the Ohio State University, Columbus, USA,
is visiting Scotland. He is giving a talk at the following places.
University of Dundee, Monday 13th December, 4pm : contact
person Raju Das ([log in to unmask])
University of Aberdeen, Tuesday 14th December, 5pm : Contact
person K.Chapman ([log in to unmask])
University of Strathclyde, Wednesday 15th December, 4 pm :
Contact person R.Rogerson ([log in to unmask])
The title of his talk is: Spatial Imaginaries and Reconceptualizing
Human Geography.
Professor Cox's main interest, as many of you would know, is in the
relation between social theory, particularly political economy, and
geography. His more specific interests are critical realist method
and marxist social theory. He has tried to apply his more
abstract ideas to the specific issues such as the politics of
urbanization in advanced societies and the spatial aspects of
political economy of South Africa. Professor Cox is a tremendously
successful political geographer who has strong interests in both
theory and method. His work on levels of abstraction and on local
dependence (often referred to as Cox's theory of local dependence) is
widely cited.
As a former student of his, I can say that there are very few
geographers who understand political economy and realize its
significance as much as Kevin does. As a critical realist, Kevin is
also sympathetic to certain approaches that are not political
economic or structuralist, although he is also critical of them.
Kevin is an exemplar of a critical geographer.
If you want to understand how one of the top human geographers in
the world thinks and produces ideas, you must not miss Kevin's
lecture.
