CONVERTING A TRADITIONAL COURSE TO OPEN LEARNING:
FACING UP TO THE ISSUES & AVOIDING THE PITFALLS

A one-day workshop from ALT
Hosted by Oxford Brookes University

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP 
This workshop was first held in Sheffield in 1998 and returns by
popular demand. Participants will be taken through the process of
converting traditional courses to distance/open learning. They will
discuss the many potential pitfalls and how to avoid them through
discussion of a case study. A methodology for course conversion will
be introduced and participants will make a start in writing open
learning material. They will leave the workshop with a checklist of
handy tips and hints to aid the course developer. 

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS 
Jean Wood has been working in the tertiary education and training
sector for 25 years, in the UK, USA, Europe and Australia. She has
recently joined the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Assessment at
the University of Edinburgh as a distance education developer. Jean
was previously at Monash University in Australia where she worked
for eight years with academic staff to develop courseware, student
support, assessment and evaluation systems for distance education
and open learning. 

The stereotypical virtual wandering scholar, Jean has been a member
of Alt since 1994 and has attended all Alt-C conferences to date. 

Clare Thomas is the Director of the Open Learning Unit at the
University of Wales, Aberystwyth. 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND 
Course developers, learning technology managers, tutors/lecturers
interested in open and distance learning. 

REQUIREMENTS 
Participants will be expected to bring with them an example of a
course they plan to convert for open learning and fragments of
learning materials to be reworked. 

REGISTRATION 
Alt members: £70 
Non-members: £130

The final programme and map will be sent to participants one week
prior to the workshop.
