Applications are invited from experienced researchers for the above post in
the Department of Applied Social Science to work on a major new ESRC funded
study "A theoretical model of what motivates public service users to
participate", as part of the ESRC Democracy and Participation programme.
The grantholder is Dr Johnston Birchall, Senior Lecturer in Sociology and
Social Policy.
The research fellow's responsibilities will include developing and testing
research instruments (including attitude scales), undertaking both
quantitative and qualitative fieldwork in several case study sites, data
analysis and the preparation of seminar papers, articles and a jointly
authored book. The post would suit candidates who have a relevant
postgraduate social science degree (including research methods training) or
a doctorate (completed or near to completion), and experience in at least
one area of public service management, research or policy development. S/he
should have research experience using both qualitative and quantitative
techniques and a personal commitment to the values of increasing user and
citizen participation, and improving the responsiveness of public services.

The salary will be within Grade 1A of the Research and Analogous salary
scale (£16286 - £24479). The appointment will be for two years beginning as
