EXCITING JOB OPPPORTUNITY
Senior Research Officer - Women's Unit, Cabinet Office
1-2 year contract or secondment
Salary up to £25k
The Rt. Hon. Baroness Jay of Paddington and the Rt. Hon. Tessa
Jowell MP are supported in their role as Ministers for Women by the
Women's Unit. The Unit is located within the Cabinet Office, with
the dual objectives of :
· working on a number of high profile projects that deliver real
improvements to women's lives and contributing to 'joined up'
Government and the cross cutting mission of the Cabinet Office.
The Women's Unit has a vacancy for an experienced Senior Research
Officer (SRO), for a period of one year, with the possibility of
extension of the placement up to a further year on review.
The new SRO will join a team of two: one Principal Research Officer
and one Research Officer. This small team provides analytical
support to the whole of the Unit, which includes those in project
teams involved in informing policy development. This includes
designing, commissioning, managing and disseminating a small
programme of externally commissioned research. In addition, there is
a heavy call on the research team to provide reliable, accurate and
up-to-date information for briefing on a wide range of subjects,
focusing on gender. There is a wide customer base for this
information including the Ministers for Women, Special Advisers,
Cabinet sub-committee members, senior policy colleagues within the
Cabinet Office, policy customers within the Women's Unit and
frequently other Government departments. Much of the work is
directly to Ministers.
The areas currently covered by the research team are, in particular:
- looking at what might be done to reduce the pay gap;
- making the work:home balance easier by spelling out the benefits
of flexible working and involving businesses in getting this message
across;
- helping girls fulfil their potential through an equal opportunities
strategy for careers advice, better and earlier education for life in
schools and greater participation in sport;
- looking at how Government communicates with women, including the
potential to use IT;
- women's financial awareness; and
- women entrepeneurs.
The Senior Research Officer post demands experience of conducting,
analysing and disseminating social research and the successful post
holder will have a well developed understanding of the current
issues in social policy. An interest in the women's agenda would be
an advantage.
Anyone interested in this position should please send a CV and
letter of application setting out why they are interested in the
post and their suitability by Monday 8 November 1999. Applicants
are also encouraged to discuss the post in more detail with Claire
