A fellow Professor has challenged me to address no less a body
than the Baconian Society of St Albans on the theme "Ethical issues
in the lives of Roger and Francis Bacon with reference to the works
of Rudyard Kipling."
I can (modestly) say that I have risen to the challenge and have my
draft ready. However, there is one point I would like to develop that
members might be able to help me with:
Francis Bacon in his "Novum Organum" writes about The Idols of the
Market Place and Kipling in "Gods of the Copybook Headings" writes
about "The Gods of the Market-Place".
My query is whether anyone fully understands "Copybook Headings"
which I place in a class along with "Cold Steel" and possibly
"McAndrews Hymn", not to mention the whole idea behind the Law of the
Jungle. Is there anything good written about it that I could refer
to, please?
