NEVILLE MACKAY APPOINTED CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF NEW MUSEUMS,
LIBRARIES AND ARCHIVES COUNCIL
Neville Mackay is to be the first Chief Executive of the Museums,
Libraries and Archives Council (MLAC), subject to ratification by the
MLAC Board in due course, Culture Secretary Chris Smith announced
today. The appointment is for five years and Mr Mackay will start
work in an advisory capacity as soon as possible.
MLAC will be a new public body providing strong, strategic leadership
for the museums, libraries and archives communities. The Chief
Executive will work alongside the Chair, Matthew Evans, in guiding
the establishment of MLAC.
Matthew Evans said:
"This appointment is a significant step in the process of creating
MLAC. Having worked with Neville Mackay for three years I have every
confidence that he is the right person to provide the leadership,
vision and independent advice which MLAC and the sector require."
Biographical Information
Neville Mackay was born in 1958 and was educated at the University of
Lancaster and University College, London. He began working for the
Civil Service in 1983 as a research officer for the Department of the
Environment. Following a spell in the Department for Education, he
moved in 1992 to the Department for National Heritage, now the
Department for Culture, Media and Sport. He is currently Head of
Libraries, Information and Archives Division, a post he has held
since 1997. He holds no other public appointments and has not carried
out any political activity in the last five years.
Notes for Editors
1. The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council will replace the
Museums and Galleries Commission and the Library and Information
Commission. It will work alongside archives bodies such as the
Royal Commission for Historical Manuscripts and the Public Record
Office. MLAC is due to be established on a formal basis on or by
1 April 2000. Other appointments to the Board of MLAC will be made
in the coming months.
2. MLAC will be a new strategic body which will focus on access,
education, excellence and economic regeneration within the field
of museums, libraries and archives. It will act as the champion
for the sector.
