I too have a run of these periodicals and have often wondered about their
origin - I suspect the hand of an official agency behind them. Also have a
copy of Phillips International Atlas (3rd edn) issued in 1939 as the Serial
Map service Atlas which was 'sold only to subscribers to the SERIAL MAP
SERVICE at a reduced price. It is a valuable background to the monthly
service, and enables the subscriber to consider further the questions raised
and the conclusions reached in the letterpress and in the news-maps of the
monthly service'

Subject: Serial Map Service
The MOD Map Library has recently been sent a complete set of the Serial Map
Service.
They started in September 1939 and continued until March 1948, concentrating
at first on War related mapping and topics and then moving on to post-war
reconstruction. The early maps were produced by George Philip and then for a
short while by John Bartholomew and W&AK Johnson before being produced
in-house from mid-1941 onwards.
Does anyone know any more of the history behind these publications? Are they
common as a complete set or do we have a rarity?
