Apologies for cross posting
The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) has added another digital archive to
its holdings as part of the the Digital Archiving Pilot Project:
Excavation Records (DAPPER) project funded by English Heritage.
The archive comes from the 1989-92 excavations undertaken by Oxford
Archaeological Unit at Eynsham Abbey in Oxfordshire which revealed part
of the precinct of the medieval abbey, including part of the cloister
and south ranges, kitchens and domestic buildings. Evidence for earlier
activity included the 11th century Anglo-Saxon abbey and earlier
Minster, and a Bronze Age enclosure.
Data is provided in the form of downloadable files and includes texts, a
database (presented as delimited text), images and a large number of
AutoCAD 14 drawings. On-line support pages are being developed to advise
on accessing and using the data. Documentation covers initial,
excavation and post-excavation agendas. Specialist summaries are also
provided.
As well as facilitating archaeological research these on-line resources
are ideal as teaching aides particularly for computing in archaeology.
The archives can be accessed through the 'project archives' option on
the main menu of ArchSearch at http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/ or drill
down from the on-line catalogue, for example, try a keyword search on
'Eynsham Abbey' and scroll through the hits until you find the OAU
excavation. Click on the resource name to bring up the detailed record
for this excavation and then click on the link in 'resource details'.
Data types have also been included amongst subject terms so a search on
'abbey and drawing' will also locate Eynsham.
The above represents a new and exciting development in terms of access,
presentation and potential re-use of archaeological data. We are very
keen to get any sort of feedback from the user community. Please email
our user services manager at [log in to unmask]
Thanks
Tony
