At the end of October The Natural History Museum will run an Identification
Qualification (IdQ) in Marine Benthic Macro-Invertebrate Groups.
The IdQ scheme was introduced with the aim of improving standards in
environmental work in the UK by awarding certificates of competence in
animal and plant identification to biologists and ecologists. The need for
quality control in the rapidly growing field of ecological consultancy is
widely recognised, and this is the first accreditation scheme that
specifically addresses biological identification skills. Qualification is
by examination and the Natural History Museum is the Awarding Body.
Accurate identification is of fundamental importance in ecological
monitoring, assessment, impact and conservation work as it often underpins
the data from which subsequent analyses and interpretations are made.
