POSTING THE MALE:
Representations of Masculinity in the Twentieth Century
Liverpool John Moores University
24 - 26 August 2000
Keynote speakers include:
Joseph Bristow (University of California at Los Angeles)
Gill Plain (University of St Andrews)
Jonathan Rutherford (Middlesex University)
Calvin Thomas (Georgia State University)
The conference aims to interrogate images and narratives of masculinity in
twentieth-century culture. It seeks to approach the subjects of gender and
gender relations by looking constructively at inscriptions of male identity
and particularly at the difficult position of being simultaneously both
perpetrator and victim of patriarchal oppression.
While interested in literary and artistic renditions of the masculine
throughout the twentieth century, the main focus of the conference will be
on modes of male self-representation since the 1960s. Can we detect certain
gender-specific changes in the way post-war men write, picture and envisage
themselves? What impact may feminist thought have had on contemporary
experiments in men's self-expression? How successfully and by what
representational means have men begun to subvert, reconstruct, or
resuscitate stereotypical paradigms of manly being?
Contributors to the conference are encouraged to consider not only specific
'themes' or contents, but also to investigate the different styles and
'poses' of masculinity and their psychic, cultural and socio-political
implications.
