Hi
Mairian and John are of course right to problematise my rather
simplistic analysis (it was slightly tongue in cheek). I certainly wasn't
seeking to dis the whole of anthropology or any other area of enquiry
per se. I've seen loads of excellent work on majority world issues
done from an anthropological perspective (e.g. Kempadoo's book on
'Global Sex Workers'). It was more a commentry on the apparent
direction and content of contemporary disability studies and the
ways in which we, in the minority world, seek our justifications. There
is also lots of very relevant work going on in CBR but it doesn't seem
to filter into disability studies very much. I find this interesting.
PS. the reference for Emma's new book is (I think?):
Stone, E. (ed.)
Disability and Development in the Majority World
Leeds: Disability Press
(more details from Colin or Geof, available very soon I hope)
