Richard Light (and Fiona)
Richard, I have two problems relating to the Social Model of Disability and
Long Term/Chronic Illness. Firstly I am told that chronic/long term illness
falls outside this model, and that the Social Model is based on economics
and centres round people with spinal injury obtained in adult life. If this
is the case, then as I have a chronic long term ilness from infancy, the
model is one which excludes me. So, where can I find an outline of this
model, in print, which I can consider in relation to myself?
Secondly, whenever I mix with other disabled people, of any and all
'imparment groups' I find complete acceptance, and enjoy a sense of
belonging which is tangible. My anxiety levels drop and I dont fell I need
to explain anything about myself in order to 'be' speak or listen. So my
experience has been on of inclusion within a group of accepting
individuals, and has not been one as I am told others have, of being
excluded on grounds of an un virtuous impaiment.
In short, who says the social model excludes some inparement groups?
