A workshop on disability, and issues of access "barriers" to PD's in the
lesbian & gay comunities... will be presented at a LGBT culture
Conference, open to the public, at New York University, Saturday Oct.
9th.
The workshop, called "Getting Into The Political Space Of Lesbian & Gay
Community And Activism.... when you can't get into the room"
....will be presented twice, at 1:30 PM (to 2:15) and at 4:00 PM (to
4:45; both times in Room 308 (verify room #, on-site), at the
New York University
Student Activities Center
5 Washington Place (at Mercer St.)
New York City.
(Location is about 2 blocks south + 2 blocks west -- of the intersection
of Broadway & East 8th St.)
The 3 part presentation will include a "middle part" with projected
slides documenting architectural barriers in L+G "public space". Slides
will be fully described for blind or visually impaired attendees.... and
there will be on-screen captions. Tape available afterwards, on
request.
The conference is free and open to all.
I'm the presenter. I'm an architectural & construction consultant, who
did a bit of reserch & teaching in my early years, and am now beginning
to return to it. I study & write on "Universal Design" for The Ragged
Edge magazine, and co-chair the Public Facilities Accessibility
Committee of Disabled In Action of Metropolitan New York, I'm also a
member of SDS.
I just joined this list.
Even if nobody reading this happens to be interested or able to attend
this educational event... perhaps this also can function as
informational "grist for the mill" of discussion, of the matter of
"diversity on campus".
I don't know if NYU has any disabled studies courses... The only NYC
schools that I know of, doing that, would be Hunter College @ CUNY (if
anyone took over the course Simi Linton started), and Nadina LaSpina's
course at New School University.
