For the past nine years I was the advisor of a club on campus that dealt
solely with disability issues and support. We held an annual disability
awareness week. During that time we borrowed wheelchairs from an agency in
town. Students, faculty and administration were given destinations to
reach on campus and had to get there on their own in a wheelchair. Posters
were put up near stairwells asking students if you were in a wheelchair,
how would you get to the next floor, etc. etc. In addition we held
concerts where the soloist was a person who was blind, held forums to talk
about campus accessibility--both physical and academic. I think the
students did a great job. The club has since disbanded because we have few
access issues on our campus anymore.
