critical geography forum members,
Association of University Staff members at Victoria University of
Wellington (not the same as Univ. of Victoria, where this e-mail
originates) have voted to strike in order to prevent their vice-chancellor
from reducing the quality of their working conditions (while also offering
no pay increases for significant productivity gains by staff).
Messages of support can be sent to Faculty and Staff at VUW via Jeff Rowe,
an industrial officer with the AUS head office in Wellington (email:

Here is further information from AUS VUW:
Pay talks at Victoria University Wellington broke down after the university
rejected
the AUS claim for a $2000 increase for academic staff, and a $2750 increase
for general staff. The employer was seeking a nil wage settlement and major
clawbacks to existing sick leave, redundancy and contract coverage clauses.
At today's hugely attended meeting, AUS Victoria members voted by an
overwhelming majority on a number of motions:
1. To deplore the employer negotiating team's stance in refusing to
negotiate wages and attempting to remove some existing and new employees
from coverage of the contracts.
2. To reject the employer position and begin an industrial campaign in
support of our position
3. A vote of no confidence in the Vice Chancellor and the Senior Management
Team
4. To strike from noon to midnight on Thursday 7 October
5. If necessary, to strike from noon to midnight on Monday 11 October
6. Non completion (or submission) of grades for full year or 2nd trimester
courses.
More information will be circulated as it comes to hand.
