Ab initio SC Network debate:
Students are mostly very conservative creatures. Seminar non-attendance usually incurs censure,
non-use of self-access area rarely does.
Our experience with the SMILE project has been that you have to lure the students into your
self-access centre by offering them goodies they can see the benefit of.
Our Open Learning Adviser, Vicky Davies, has organised a series of seminars on such topics as
surfing the internet for 'essay-useful' websites. She also has prepared dossiers of material on
the regularly recurring essay topics in the various languages, set up a Tandem learning
"Newsagent's window". When she has lured them in - using all sorts of brightly coloured notices
about the place - she extols to the students the virtue of using the Mediatheque facilities on a
regular basis. By this means she has managed to build up last year, and even more so this year,
a very healthy customer base.
Good responding to everyone!
