***In any profession, there are things that work and things that do not. The
evidence that some physio modalities undoubtedly provide patients with relief
proves that they 'work'. This does not mean to say that anyone knows whether
the healing or pain reduction is due to a placebo effect or something more
directly physiological. It simply shows that the modality 'works'.
Regarding psychotherapy (and don't ask me to find the reference immediately -
I came across this more than 10 years ago), research showed that
psychotherapy had no greater success rate than the counselling and empathy of
a close friend or priest in the management of a wide array of psychological
problems, such as anxiety, depression, some psychoses and other common
disorders.
Maybe some of those alternative folk who claim that formal therapy of any
form generally is a waste of time, effort and money are right??
