THE CHILTERN OPEN AIR MUSEUM
Chalfont St.Giles, Bucks. HP8 4AD
(Reg Charity No.272381)
We, at this museum have saved the local High Wycombe Toll House
from destruction. We believe that we should do more in this field and
intend to compose a list of all the toll houses still standing today,
together with their individual histories. The terms of reference of this
Toll House List are:
1.The Toll House List will consist of all the buildings in England
which are standing complete on 31st December 1999 and have been used to
collect tolls for the upkeep of public or private roads and bridges.
2.The basic details which shall be sought for each toll house are:
a) The location & date of building,
b) The trust or authority under which toll collections were
made,
c) The date when they ceased to collect tolls,
d) Their present use and condition and
e) The present location, if not on the original site.
3.Photographs and other records and information will be collected
and entered into a computer database. The location shall, preferably,
include the National Grid Reference.
4. The Toll House List shall be available to all.
Our Toll House List at present contains records of over 500 toll
houses but it is far from complete and we estimate that there are between
700 & 800 in total. The information that we about each building is also
very sketchy.
We are publicising this project as widely as possible and invite
all who are interested in the subject and/or have information on toll
houses in their vicinity to contact us. Please email, telephone at 01494
728096 or write to the undersigned at the Museum. We shall be delighted
to hear from you.
John Wellsman.
