Fordham University's Third Graduate English Association Conference seeks
to investigate the manifestations of malady in literature not only in a
strictly literal sense, but also in a metaphorical one. We invite paper
proposals, completed papers and/or panels on studies ranging from
physical, mental and spiritual diseases to societal ills, such as
prejudices based on race, gender or religious affiliation. By its nature,
the conference allows for submissions employing any theoretical approach
on literature from any time period and genre.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
The Black Plague "Blindness"
Racism AIDS
Misogyny Cancers of the Political
Psychological Disorders Nausea
Afflicted Bodies Bodily Decay Melancholy
Fear Apocalyptic Hysteria
Spiritual Crisis Religious Fanaticism
Consumption/Tuberculosis Technological Crises
Anti-Semitism
Papers should not exceed twenty minutes in reading time and will be
organized into sessions based on content. We also encourage individuals
to organize their own special panels.
1-2 page proposals or completed papers should include paper titles,
author's name and address, and institution or affiliation. Please include
any audio-visual needs on the abstract. Those interested in chairing a
session should also submit a brief biographical sketch highlighting
area(s) of expertise.
The Deadline for submissions is December 15, 1999.
