Hi I'm new to this list too, and have been lurking for a while trying to get
a feel for the terminology. I once posted to a similar group and never got a
proper reply to my question, just lots of comments about my use of language.
Anyway in response to recent postings about hospital treatment (or lack of
it) for brain injured patients, I would like to let readers know of a pilot
project my organisation is trying to set up.
I work with people who have acquired or were born with various impairments
which have led to them being disAbled by society. It has come to our
attention that those with brain injuries lack some quite basic assistance
whilst still in hospital at an early stage and we therefore intend to run a
"planning" service for want of a better word , in the rehab unit of our
local hospital.
The initiative is very much based on the concept of inclusion starting with
the premise that everyone has a right to live in and contribute to their
chosen community. How they go about doing so should be decided by
themselves, their families and their loved ones with advice from a variety
of professionals who are there to provide information rather than lay down
barriers.
We are quite hopeful that the pilot project will get funding and lead on to
a more permanent unit within the hospital being set up. At this stage we
need evidence of relevant research and feedback from those who have been on
the receiving end of current practice to enable us in putting forward a good
case for funding.
