Most of the literature is devoted to studies at local (typically county)
level.
Assuming (not necessarily correctly!) that the student is interested in
'holy wells' then the only general study in recent years is:
[Author:] Rattue, James
[Title:] The living stream, holy wells in historical context
[Publisher:] Boydell and Brewer
[Date:] 1995
In addition
[Author: Quinn, Phil
[Title: Holy wells of Bath and Bristol Region
[Publisher: Logaston Press
[Date: 1999
contains an excellent 71 page introductory discussion of holy wells that is
well worth reading. The gazetteer of wells in the Bath and Bristol region
that makes up the rest of the book is also exemplary - far better than most
other regional studies.
