Deal colleagues - Here is a message I have received from some "learning
technologists " in Sweden. As you will see they are looking for ideas -
about how to help learners model learning. I consider this to be **really
important** and would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Could you
email (DIRECT) the sender:

If there is something of general interest, then ALT might like to make it
more public - e.g. in ALT-N. I am sure the "school" interest in Sweden
could be mapped on to HE/FE
so
Come on - what metaphors do we have that are usefully for helping learners
learn??
[ PS my contact with them was a simple reply to an enquiry about concept
mapping]

We are all practioners in the field of education (K-12). However, in my
point of view, in order to develop your skill as a practitioner, it seems
helpful to reflect upon theoretical models available for structuring
knowlege -- both about your subject and about "structuring knowledge" from
a learners perspective. We have a continuous discussion about "knowledge"
and the structure of it at our school. That makes me even "theoretically
interested" though I will probably never have the time to dig further into
this interesting area.

By the way, we are just trying to develop some web based course material in
mathematics (HyperElementa). We have been struggling with the choice of a
good metaphor that helps learners develop metaknowledge -- and is strong
enough to change the more sterotypic image of mathematics as "a set of
rules" (boring and more or less incomprehensible).
We "think" that a landscape is a plausible choice (e.g. words like "method"
meaning "along the way", the "field" of mathematics, Ference Martons
fenomenographic research and ideas about discerning the parts from the
whole by varying the phenomenon...).
Are there any "guidelines" from a theoretical perspective and empirical
studies for the choice of a good metaphor for learning material in general?
It would be interesting to hear your point of view, but of course, I know
our time is limited. (On the other hand, that's why I spend it on these
issues.)
Best regards,
P-D
