I am very pleased to see lots of activity on the list after
the meeting on Thursday. Just to bring some context to
those of you who couldn't attend the meeting let me
summarize the discussion, before adding to it myself.
1. A call from Sarah Vaughan <[log in to unmask]> to
find out if there is interest in a UK-based mailing list of
WebCT users. If there is enough interest, she is
willing to set it up. Please let her know.
2. Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund - HEFCE is running a
series of seminars for senior management on Institutional
Learning and Teaching Strategies. Every UK HEI has been
asked to nominate one person to assist. We suggest you find
out who is going from your institution and liaise with them
to influence your University's LT strategy and find out
about HEFCE's advice on this matter.
3. ALT is willing to take the TLT Officers as a special
interest group in future conferences. This means we can
meet as part of the conference at a reasonable time, not at
8.00 a.m! Many thanks to Rhonda Riachi for this generous
offer.
4. ILT - Concerns from Learning Technologists were
expressed early at the pre-conference workshop run by
Alison Robinson from ILT on Tuesday. It was made clear then
that the ILT had not made any final decisions on entry
routes and membership status for TLT officer types, and
indeed, a consequent presentation on the ILT by Paul Clark
during the Conference seemed to pick up on some of the
points and concerns raised at the workshop.
On our Thursday meeting, it was suggested that the ILT meet
the TLT Officers community to discuss entry and membership
with those concerned. Alison agreed in principle with the
idea and Rhonda volunteered to arrange the meeting with the
ILT. As you know from previous messages, various locations
have been suggested, mainly York (ILT headquarters) or
London (ALT could find a host if needed).
Now for my contribution to the discussion. Rather than
discussing location or definition of TLT officers
(except to agree with Susan's definition, i.e. those
involved in "promoting and/or supporting the pedagogically
effective uptake of specific learning technologies") I
would like to invite all of you to browse the ILT
individual application documents and note down any areas
where you would find difficulties relating requirements to
your work. I will try to compile those in preparation for
the workshop, together with a clearer definition of our
work. Location is of course important, so I will also keep
track of preferences and liaise with Rhonda in any final
decision.
Many thanks to all of you for your contributions,
Merce Rius
