The deadline for HEFCE receipt of responses to the draft criteria is 15
October 1999. If you have any comments which you would like SPA to take
account of in its response, please send them to me by 25 September at the
very latest. Many thanks, John Veit Wilson.

Subject: RAE UoA 40 draft assessment criteria and working methods

This message is for members of the Social Policy Association and is about
the criteria and methods which are to be used by the 2001 Research
Assessment Exercise panel for unit of assessment 40 Social Policy and
Administration [and similarly UoA 41 Social Work].
Professor Susanne MacGregor will chair the joint panel of 40/41,
and she addressed the recent annual conference of the SPA and outlined the
draft criteria and methods to be used, to open a discussion before final
decisions are taken. A discussion paper on these issues is to be issued
and will be available on the HEFCE RAE website, as will the composition of
the panel when it is finalised. It requries responses to be received
by 15 October 1999.
The SPA encourages all members and others to read the discussion papers
and take part in the debate, so that the process of assessment and
the criteria to be used reflect the views of the social policy community
as a whole. It is particularly important to make our views known to HEFCE,
since the dominant paradigm often tends to be that of natural science
whose criteria of excellence differ in significant respects from those of
social science in general and social policy in particular.
Anyone is naturally free to make their response direct to HEFCE [or their
national funding council], but if anyone wishes to have theirs taken into
account by and added to the response which the SPA Executive Committee
will be making, then please send the response or other comments to me by
27 September.
John Veit Wilson.
