Here is the latest set of quotations, for September 12th to 18th

1. 'Heart may fail, and Strength outwear, and Purpose turn to Loathing,
But the everyday affair of business, meals and clothing,
Builds a bulkhead 'twixt Despair and the Edge of Nothing.'
2. 'When all the world would have a matter hid,
Since Truth is seldom friend to any crowd,
Men write in fable, as old Aesop did,
Jesting at that which none will name aloud.
And this they needs must do, or it will fall
Unless they please they are not heard at all.'
3. 'Who holds by Thee hath Heaven in fee
To gild his dross thereby,
And knowledge sure that he endure
A child until he die.'

Last week's quotations
(September 5th to 11th)
And here are the sources of our last set of quotations:
1. ... some of the swine fought the invasion, foaming and jerking; some were
surrendering to it, sleepily, as to a luxurious back-scratching ... is from
'The Eye of Allah' in 'Debits and Credits'. It describes the casting out of
devils into the Gadarene Swine in an illuminated manuscript by the monk John
of Burgos, who is inspired by the strange seething images he sees though a
microscope.
2. ...The ragged crew actually laughed at me - such laughter as I hope I may
never hear again. They cackled, yelled, whistled, and howled as I walked
into their midst... is from 'The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes' in 'Wee
Willie Winkie'. Jukes has fallen into a pit in the sand-dunes by the Ganges.
Here Hindus, thought to be dead, who have survived the burning ghats, are
incarcerated, living on crows, with no chance of escape.
3. ...there be certain times in a man's life, when, through great sorrow or
sin, all the boy in him is burnt and seared away so that he passes at one
step to the more sorrowful state of manhood... is from 'The Dream of Duncan
Parenness' in 'Life's Handicap', written while RK was only eighteen.
Shattered by a broken love affair, Duncan Parenness coldly accepts, in a
nightmare encounter with an image of himself, that he has shed the illusions
of youth.
Best regards to all, John R
