Further to my earlier message on this subject, which contained the text
of a letter from the BBC which we published in Local History Magazine in
April, Rob Perks from the National Sound Archive at the British Library
has told us today that local BBC radio stations are making 'local
arrangements' to provide tapes to local studies libraries and archives
where there has been local contact.
Rob and his colleagues are anxious to ensure that copies are available
locally, but this will only happen where there are local initiatives.
Rob also says that some of the BBC radio producers who worked on The
Century Speaks were on temporary contracts and are now leaving the BBC -
so it is probably quite important that contact is made now if your local
library/archive does not have copies of the interviews.
There may be a charge for the copies as the BBC's funds do not cover
this, although in some places the problem has been overcome.
So, if you are interested, check with your local studies
library/archives now to find out what is happening in your area.
May I take this opportunity to tell list members that the Local History
Magazine website has been redesigned and updated and now contains a full
list of county local history associations, together with a list of local
history courses from over 30 universities across the country. The URL is
www.local-history.co.uk.
