Ree's Manufacturing Industry the publisher's David and Charles reprint of
extracts from Abraham Rees Cyclopedia has in Volume five, items on
sulphuric acid and vitriolic acid. The vitiolic acid article mentions that
Roebuck's first lead chamber was erected in Birmingham in 1746, and the
same works are said( 1815) in the occupation of Messrs Alton and Armitage.
There are said to be 8 considerable manufacturers of sulphuric acid at and
near Birmingham but the largest lead chamber is in Lancashire. This is
circa 1820. Widnes does not start to be involved in the chemical industry
until after 1847 see Hardie DWF Chemical Industry in Widnes.
